Planet Agriculture (previously Area Under Management)

Planet Agriculture, previously called Area Under Management (AUM), is Planet's area-based subscription for users who need continuous access to PlanetScope imagery over specific geographic regions. Instead of paying per image or per API call, you subscribe to a defined area and access the PlanetScope data available within it for the subscription period.

Which applies to you

Accounts on Planet Agriculture, one of the current packages, define their areas of access up front, pay for them per square kilometre per year, and your platform usage is metered in monitoring credits. Accounts bought before that change are on the Area Under Management model and keep it until they are migrated.

If your plan uses monitoring credits

This is Planet Agriculture.

  • Areas of access are defined up front and priced in US dollars per square kilometre per year.
  • One hectare minimum. The smallest area you can order from is 1 hectare (0.01 km²).
  • Next-day data recency is included.
  • A two-year archive is included. Your access covers imagery from the two years before your contract start, plus all new imagery captured during the contract term. Ordering data from within that window consumes no monitoring credits.
  • Older imagery draws credits. Data from before the two-year window is still available and consumes monitoring credits at 25 credits per square kilometre.
Note: Check the time of interest on your subscriptions. A subscription whose time of interest reaches back past the two-year window will pull archive imagery, which draws credits at the rate above. Keeping the time of interest inside the included window avoids that spend.

Coverage tiers. Planet Agriculture is offered as Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3 and Global Land. Tiers 1, 2 and 3 are for agriculture use cases only. Global Land may be used for other use cases, excluding defence and intelligence. Tier 1 and Global Land are priced the same, so Global Land avoids having to portion quota across separate tiers.

Volume discounts are available on Agriculture Premium. Agriculture Reserved has no volume discounts, and its reasonable-use policy covers a standard level of basic platform capability for typical daily monitoring workflows.

Agriculture Premium is available through self-service purchase for commercial agriculture businesses with volumes under 300 km².

If your plan uses the Area Under Management model

Applies to plans bought before Planet moved to monitoring credits.

You subscribe to a defined geographic area, measured in km², and gain access to all available PlanetScope data — both archive and monitoring (newly acquired) — within that area for the subscription period. There are no per-image download fees for data within your AUM.

What "Area Under Management" means

AUM is the total geographic area you are actively monitoring. It is calculated as the union of all unique Areas of Interest (AOIs) used in your orders within the subscription period (12 months from first purchase). Because it is a union:

  • Every new AOI you order adds to your total monitored footprint.
  • Overlapping areas are counted only once.
  • Re-ordering data for the same polygon does not consume additional quota.

How the subscription works

  • You subscribe to your areas of interest, and for 12 months you can access all available PlanetScope data in those areas — archive and monitoring.
  • Quota is purchasable in 5 km² increments per tier.
  • You can spread your quota across multiple disconnected parcels, each with a minimum size of 0.01 km².
  • The subscription period begins at your first purchase and lasts 12 months.
  • Annual pricing depends on the region you download from, offered as Global, Tier One, Tier Two and Tier Three.

Topping up quota

  • Top-ups can be purchased at any time.
  • Top-ups are co-termed with the original subscription — they share the same end date, and the price is pro-rated to the remaining period.
  • During the final three months of the subscription, any additional quota purchase requires renewing for one additional year.

Frequently asked questions

If I order data for a polygon today and re-order the same polygon next week, do I consume quota twice?
No. As long as you order the same polygon, the area is counted only once — re-fetching data does not consume additional quota within the subscription period.

If I order polygon A today, then expand it into a larger polygon A′ that fully contains A, how much quota do I consume?
You consume the total area of polygon A′. Because AUM uses the union of all polygons, the original and expanded areas are consolidated.
