When you clip an order to an Area of Interest (AOI), you are charged for the area you receive rather than the full footprint of each scene. How that charge is calculated depends on which pricing model your plan uses.
Which applies to you
Your plan is shown in your Planet account. Plans on the current packages are charged in monitoring credits. Plans bought before the change are charged against download quota in square kilometres.
If your plan uses monitoring credits
Minimum clip size
The minimum order clipping size is 1 sq km for Insights Flex, Insights Premium, Insights Reserved, Mosaics and Open Water. If you clip an area smaller than 1 sq km, it is treated as 1 sq km.
Minimum order clipping does not apply to Agriculture packages.
How ordering consumes credits
Credits are consumed based on the total area, in square kilometres, of the data you order. Clipping to your AOI therefore reduces the credits an order consumes, because you receive and are charged for a smaller area.
Credit rates vary with data recency — the more recent the imagery when your request is fulfilled, the more credits it consumes. Ordering near-real-time imagery can cost several times more than ordering the same area of 30-day-old imagery.
If your plan uses download quota (sq km)
Applies to plans bought before Planet moved to monitoring credits. On these plans the clipping type determines the deduction that applies against your quota. The graphic below explains how quota is calculated for the "preferred" clipping type.
