Choosing what to buy

What you buy depends on three things: whether you want to monitor an area continuously or capture a specific moment, whether you know your areas of interest up front, and how recent the imagery needs to be.

Monitoring change over time

Continuous monitoring uses PlanetScope imagery, captured daily across Earth's landmass. It suits agriculture, forestry, urban planning, disaster response and environmental monitoring — anywhere you need to see the same place change.

Choose based on how you work:

  • Insights Flex — global access without defining areas up front. Monthly visual mosaics, PlanetScope scenes 30 days and older, and public imagery sources. Best if your areas of interest change often or you are still exploring.
  • Insights Premium — you define your areas of access up front and pay per square kilometre per year, at a lower rate than Flex, with platform actions charged in monitoring credits.
  • Insights Reserved — the same defined-area model at a higher rate, with basic platform actions included rather than charged. Best when you want predictable costs.
  • Mosaics — analysis-ready harmonised mosaics from quarterly to weekly, for tracking broad-area change.
  • Agriculture — for commercial agriculture, with areas defined down to 1 hectare and a two-year historical archive.
  • Open Water — near-daily imagery and vessel detections across open-water, coastal and near-coast regions.

You can combine packages — for example Premium over known sites, plus Flex for ad-hoc work elsewhere. Get pricing, or see the overview of pricing and packaging.

Tasking options

Type Description Features
SkySat Archive Access historical imagery, 30+ days old No new capture required
Flexible Tasking Best-effort capture in your time window Retries until the window expires
Assured Tasking Guaranteed, priority capture Reserved satellite time and fast delivery

How tasking works

  1. Define an area of interest. The minimum tasking area is 25 square kilometres.
  2. Choose a time window and, depending on urgency and budget, a tasking type.
  3. Submit the request through the Tasking Dashboard or the Tasking API.
  4. Planet assigns the task and schedules SkySat to capture within your window, prioritised according to the tasking type.
  5. Imagery is captured and delivered, in as little as three hours after capture for high-priority tasks.

Note: monitoring credits are specific to PlanetScope products, so tasking is not metered in them.
