Changes to TLS Protocol
We are writing to inform our users about a significant update regarding the Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol, which affects connections to api.planet.com. As of March 2022, TLS 1.0 and 1.1 protocols have been disabled.
Understanding TLS:
TLS plays a vital role in securing online interactions, particularly when accessing websites with an 'https://' prefix. It is essentially a security mechanism that safeguards your data from interception and eavesdropping during transmission. While its predecessors, such as SSL, have served well for decades, evolving security threats necessitate the adoption of more robust protocols.
Will You Be Affected?
If your system does not currently support TLS 1.2 or later, you may experience disruptions in accessing our services.
For ArcGIS Integration Users:
Those utilizing our ArcGIS integration may encounter specific error messages due to these changes.
How to Upgrade to a Supported TLS Version:
For users of ArcGIS Pro:
ESRI has provided detailed instructions on enabling TLS 1.2 specifically for ArcGIS Pro. Please refer to their FAQ for guidance. Ensure that your system meets the necessary requirements for TLS 1.2 support.
For macOS Users:
If your macOS version is older than 10.8, consider upgrading your operating system to ensure compatibility with TLS 1.2+.
For Linux Users:
Check your OpenSSL version using the openssl version
command. TLS 1.2 is supported in OpenSSL version v1.0.1 and later. Alternatively, LibreSSL also offers support for TLS 1.2. Update your OpenSSL package if you're using an outdated version.
Ensuring Data Security:
We understand the importance of maintaining the integrity and security of your data. These changes are part of our ongoing efforts to enhance security measures and protect your information during online interactions.
