AUM Subscription Explanation

The Area Under Management (AUM) model is designed for users who need continuous, scalable access to satellite imagery over specific geographic regions—especially for use cases like agriculture, environmental monitoring, and land management. Instead of paying per image or API call, customers subscribe to a defined area (km²) and receive continuous access (usually 12 months) to imagery and data products within that region.

What is AUM?

At its core, AUM represents the total geographic area you are actively monitoring. This is calculated as the union of all unique Areas of Interest (AOIs) you have used within a rolling 12-month period.

This means:

  • Every new AOI you activate adds to your total monitored footprint.
  • Previously added areas are not replaced—they remain part of your AUM for 12 months from first use.
  • The system tracks your total area based on the combined coverage of all AOIs.

How the Subscription Works

With an AUM plan, you subscribe to specific areas (e.g., agricultural fields), and for 12 months, you gain access to:

  • All available PlanetScope imagery over those areas
  • Both historical (archive) and newly acquired (monitoring) data

There are no per-image download fees—everything within your AOI is included.
