How Does Area Under Management Quota Work?

You subscribe to your areas of interest (For example, agriculture fields), and for one year, you can access all available PlanetScope data in that area, both archive and monitoring. This subscription model is ideal for long time series over smaller, well-defined areas, such as agriculture and other continuous monitoring use cases.

The annual subscription price depends on the region where you want to download the data. See the pricing page for more information on tiers. Your first purchase includes a 23% discount, so we recommend estimating your full-year quota requirements and purchasing upfront. 

You can purchase the Area Under Management quota in increments of 5 square kilometers. You can consume this quota over multiple disconnected areas (For example, parcels), each with a minimum size of 0.01 square kilometers.

Your subscription period begins at the time of your first purchase and lasts for 12 months.

Topping Up Quota

If you need additional quota, you can purchase it anytime during the year with quota top-ups. Consecutive purchases are co-termed with your first purchase, and the price is proportional to the remaining period. There is a 30% price increase for top-ups in the middle of your contract, so we recommend that you plan up front for how much quota you will require. 

During the last three months of the subscription period, it is required to subscribe for one additional year.

Area Under Management quota is calculated as the area of the union of all of your order geometries used within the period of your contract.

Common Questions

• Suppose I order the data for a polygon A today and then once again for the same polygon a week from now. Do I consume quota twice?
  Answer: No. As long as you are fetching the data from the same polygon, you will only consume the Area Under Management quota once when the area of the polygon is first ordered.
  
  
• If I order the data for polygon A today, then increase the polygon a bit (polygon A’). How much quota will I consume?
  Answer: As long as the polygon A is fully within polygon A’, you will consume the total area of polygon A’, because these polygons will be unioned to calculate the quota.
  
  
•  If I purchase 5 square kilometers today and another 5 square kilometers in 6 months, how much will I pay?
  Answer: Your first purchase will be for the full price, the second one will be prorated to 50% as you have 6 months left on your contract, with an additional 30% for mid-contract purchases.
