Rate limits differ by API and by plan. If you exceed a rate limit, the API responds with an HTTP 429 Too Many Requests status code. The response may include a Retry-After header that tells you when to retry. Wait for that time, then retry with exponential backoff. The Planet Python client handles this automatically and retries several times.
The following rate limits are currently in place for the Data API:
- Activation endpoint: 2 requests per second
- Download endpoint: 5 requests per second
- Search endpoint: 5 requests per second
- Other endpoints: 10 requests per second
Plan-level limits are published on the Platform pricing page, and some API references include endpoint-specific limits. For details, see Rate limiting.
