Understanding Planet's AUM Model

The Area Under Management (AUM) model offers users a streamlined approach to accessing PlanetScope satellite imagery. By subscribing to specific areas of interest (AOI), users gain comprehensive access to both historical and ongoing PlanetScope data for a defined period. The total "area under management" is defined as "the area of union of all polygons used in the orders within a period of one year." Best for use cases where a high revisit rate is needed such as agriculture, energy, utilities, and water monitoring.

Overview

Under the AUM model, users subscribe to designated geographic areas—such as agricultural fields or other regions requiring consistent monitoring. Subscribers can access all available PlanetScope data for these areas, encompassing both archived and newly acquired imagery. This model is particularly beneficial for applications necessitating continuous observation, such as precision agriculture, environmental monitoring, and land management.

Key Features

  • Subscription Tiers: Annual subscription pricing varies based on the country or region of interest. Countries are categorized into different tiers, each with associated pricing structures. Detailed information on tier classifications and pricing can be found on the pricing page. Coverage is defined as four areas: Global, Tier One, Tier Two, and Tier Three. You can find full lists of locations in the maps above.

  • Subscription Duration: The subscription period commences upon the initial purchase and extends for 12 months.

  • Additional Quotas ("Top-ups"): Should users require more area coverage during the subscription period, additional quotas can be purchased at any time. These top-up quotas are co-termed with the original subscription, meaning their validity aligns with the remaining duration of the initial subscription. Pricing for top-ups is adjusted proportionally based on the remaining subscription period. Notably, during the final three months of the subscription, any additional quota purchases will necessitate a renewal for an additional year.

  • Overage Policy: If users exceed their subscribed quota, an overage fee of 20% applies. To avoid such charges, it is advisable to accurately estimate and purchase the necessary quota in advance.

  • Definition of "Area Under Management": This term refers to the cumulative area covered by all unique polygons (areas of interest) for which data has been ordered within the subscription year. Importantly, overlapping areas are counted only once, based on the union of all polygons.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: If I order data for a specific polygon today and then reorder data for the same polygon next week, will it consume my quota twice?

A: No. Reordering data for the same polygon does not consume additional quota. The area is counted only once, regardless of the number of times data is accessed within the subscription period.

Q: What happens if I slightly expand my area of interest after an initial order?

A: If the new polygon encompasses the original area entirely, the quota consumed will correspond to the total area of the expanded polygon. This follows the "union of polygons" principle, where overlapping areas are consolidated.

Q: How is pricing affected if I purchase additional quota midway through my subscription?

A: Additional quota purchases are co-termed with the original subscription, meaning they share the same end date.
