You've completed your purchase, but you or your team can't use the product yet. This is expected. If your account uses workspaces, new quota goes to your customer account, not to a workspace. An Account Admin has to allocate the quota to a workspace before anyone can use it.
This article explains why, how to check whether you need to allocate, and how to do it.
In short
- Purchased quota starts at the account level and is unassigned.
- Nobody can use quota until it is allocated to a workspace.
- Quota is allocated to a workspace, not to individual users. Everyone in the workspace uses the same balance.
- Only Account Admins can allocate quota.
- For credit-based packages, allocate both the data product and the Monitoring Credits.
Why doesn't my purchase show up for my team?
Workspaces let you organize people and usage within your customer account. Each workspace is a separate place to work, and its usage counts against the quota allocated to it. This lets you split one purchase between teams, projects or departments. It also means new quota has no workspace until an admin assigns it to one.
Note: Workspaces are not yet available to all customers. If you don't see workspace features in the Account Manager, your account doesn't use workspaces and you don't need to allocate quota. If you expected to see workspaces, contact Planet Support or your Customer Success Manager.
Who can allocate quota?
| Role | Can allocate quota? | What they can do |
|---|---|---|
| Account Admin | Yes | Makes purchases, creates workspaces, allocates quota and credits, and manages users in every workspace. |
| Workspace Admin | No | Adds users to their own workspace and manages roles in it. Can't manage the account's overall quota. |
| Workspace Member | No | Uses the quota and shared resources in their workspace. |
To check your role, go to Account Manager > Settings > User Settings. If you aren't an Account Admin, send this article to your Account Admin and ask them to allocate the quota.
Step 1: Check whether you have unassigned quota
- Open the Account Manager at insights.planet.com/account. You can also get there from the Planet Insights Platform homepage or the top-left navigation menu.
- Open the My Plan and Products tab.
- Under My Products, find the workspace column for each product. Products that aren't assigned to a workspace show as unassigned and have an Allocate button.
If a product shows as unassigned, nobody can use it yet. Continue to the next steps.
Step 2: Make sure a workspace exists and has the right people in it
- Open the Workspaces tab.
- If you need a new workspace, click Create workspace, enter a name and confirm.
- Open the workspace and use the Access tab (or Manage Access) to add the users who need the product.
Note: A user can belong to only one workspace at a time. By default you can create up to 25 workspaces, depending on your plan. To request more, contact Planet Support or your Customer Success Manager.
Step 3: Allocate the quota
- Open the Quota management tab in the Account Manager. You can also click Allocate next to an unassigned product in My Products.
- Select the source to transfer from. For a new purchase, this is your customer account. You can also move quota from another workspace.
- Select the product you want to transfer quota for.
- Select the destination workspace.
- Enter the amount to transfer as a number, not a percentage.
- Check the transfer summary and confirm.
Repeat these steps for each product and for each workspace that needs quota.
Step 4: For credit-based packages, allocate Monitoring Credits too
For credit-based packages, the data product and the Monitoring Credits are allocated separately, and a workspace needs both:
- Allocating the data product gives the workspace access to it.
- Allocating Monitoring Credits gives the workspace a balance to spend on it.
If you allocate only one of them, the workspace still can't use the product. This is the most common reason a product still doesn't work after allocation.
You don't need to split credits by product. One credit balance covers every product allocated to the workspace.
Step 5: Check the allocation
- Open the Workspaces tab and select the workspace.
- Open the Products tab. Every product you allocated should appear with its provisioned and used quota.
- Open the Usage tab to see the workspace's Monitoring Credit balance and usage.
Allocation rules
- You can allocate only unused quota.
- You enter quota as numbers, not percentages.
- You can't transfer quota between different products. Each transfer moves quota for one product.
- Area Quota products and Platform Access products can't be moved in the same transfer. Do a separate transfer for each.
- Quota allocation isn't available to every customer, and some products don't support it (see below).
Products that must be in the same workspace
These products work only when they are allocated to the same workspace:
| Product | Must be in the same workspace as |
|---|---|
| Planet Insights Flex, Premium and Reserved | Monitoring Credits |
| Agriculture (Global and Tiers 1–3) and Agriculture Subscriptions | Monitoring Credits |
| Mosaics (Hybrid, Subscription and SuperRes) | Monitoring Credits |
| Openwater Monitoring | Openwater Archive |
Products that can't be in the same workspace
These products conflict with each other. Allocate them to different workspaces:
| Product | Can't be in the same workspace as |
|---|---|
| Planet Insights Premium | Planet Insights Reserved |
| Mosaics Hybrid | Mosaics Subscription |
| Mosaics Hybrid | Mosaics SuperRes Subscription |
| Mosaics Subscription | Mosaics SuperRes Subscription |
| Agriculture Global | Agriculture Tiers 1–3 |
| Agriculture Global and Agriculture Tiers 1–3 | Agriculture Subscription Plans |
| Openwater Archive | Openwater Archive (with 30 day hold) |
Products that need an extra step: quota reservation
For Planetary Variables and ARPS, allocating quota to a workspace isn't enough. You also need to reserve quota for a specific area of interest before you can use it. See Reserve quota and the Quota Reservations API in the Planet documentation.
Products you can't allocate yourself
These products don't support self-service workspace allocation:
- Custom Mosaics
- Analytic Feeds
- Tasking credits
- Legacy products, which are read-only in the Account Manager
You can still see these products and their usage in My Products. To use them in more than one workspace, contact your Customer Success Manager.
Troubleshooting
I don't see the Quota management tab or the Allocate button
- You may not be an Account Admin. Only Account Admins can see My Plan and Products and allocate quota. Check your role under Settings > User Settings.
- Your account may not use workspaces. Without workspaces, you don't need to allocate quota.
- The product may not support allocation. See Products you can't allocate yourself above.
I allocated the product, but my team still can't use it
- For credit-based packages, check that you allocated Monitoring Credits to the same workspace as the product.
- Check that the product's required partner product is in the same workspace. See Products that must be in the same workspace.
- Check that the users are in the correct workspace. Users can use only the quota in their own workspace.
- For Planetary Variables or ARPS, check that you've created a quota reservation for your area of interest.
I'm an Account Admin and I can't use the quota I allocated
Account Admins can manage every workspace but can use quota from only one workspace. Make sure you allocated quota to the workspace you belong to.
I allocated too much (or too little) to a workspace
Run another transfer in Quota management and choose the workspace as the source to move its unused quota to another workspace. You can't move quota that has already been used.
Keep track of your usage
- The Usage tab shows quota bars with the percentage used, days remaining and remaining balance.
- Quota notifications are sent at 50%, 90% and 100% of your quota. You can choose in-app notifications, email or both under Account > Notifications.
- At 90%, an orange alert bar appears in the Account Manager.
Need help?
If you still can't get your purchase working, contact Planet Support or your Customer Success Manager. Include your Account ID (Settings > Account Settings) and the name of the product and workspace.
