New Positions at ASU’s Center for Global Discovery and Conservation Science
Global Coral Reef Monitoring
Postdoctoral Position Announcement
March 8, 2019—A postdoctoral research position is available for a remote sensing specialist with experience in time-series satellite image analysis. This position will be mentored and funded by Greg Asner as part of Paul Allen’s Vulcan Inc. partnership called the Allen Coral Atlas.
The partnership includes Arizona State University’s Center for Global Discovery and Conservation Science (ASU-GDCS), Planet Inc., University of Queensland, and the National Geographic Society. This multi-organizational team is undertaking scientific research and engineering to implement a new global coral reef monitoring system. The system will utilize more than 100 Planet satellites currently in Earth orbit to map coral reefs and to monitor reef changes including mass bleaching, storm surge, ship groundings, and coastal runoff events.
We seek a postdoctoral researcher to develop scientific designs for a monitoring system that incorporates large volumes of satellite data to detect changes in reef cover and condition at high spatial resolution. Required skills include quantitative optical remote sensing, atmospheric correction, bathymetric modeling, and time-series analysis. The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with other scientists and engineers to implement, test and improve the coral monitoring system over time.
The position will be funded for an initial year at ASU’s Center for Global Discovery and Conservation Science (GDCS) based in Tempe, Arizona. Funding may be extended for additional years. A Ph.D. in remote sensing is required. Candidates should send a cover letter, statement of research interests that includes your accomplishments and how this position will help you achieve your career objectives, current curriculum vitae, and the names of two references (please include email addresses and phone numbers). Review of applications will begin March 15, 2019, and continue until the position is filled.
Applications should be sent to Andrea Cottrell: andrea.cottrell@asu.edu
