Earth Observation

Has Planet considered the possibility to build a Landsat-like Earth observation system? My colleagues at NASA and I did a study for a next-generation Landsat which developed concepts for a Landsat with much better spatial, spectral and temporal resolution, and costing significantly less than the current system. NASA management was not interested in following up and is now just building a copy of the last Landsat.

Please let me know if you might be interested in this possibility. This is particularly attractive as the Landsat archive is now available to all. I will be happy to fill you in on all the details of our study, and on the work that I have done to promote this project. More details may be found at: http://fullspectralimaging.net/.

Sincerely,

John Bolton

  • Hi John, I manage our space systems including future satellite designs. Thanks for sharing this information.

We've been actively engaged with the Sustainable Land Imaging Architecture Study and Science teams, and have provided some inputs to their studies and potential future architectures to complement and augment the legacy approach. It's still to be determined whether these suggestions influence the future architecture direction.

Regardless, we'd be happy to have a conversation about your work. Feel free to shoot me an email at james@planet.com and we can take it from there.

    James
