Planet imagery can detect vessels as small as approximately 10 meters in length (around 3 pixels in PlanetScope imagery). However, detection accuracy at this size can vary significantly depending on image quality and environmental conditions.
Factors that may affect detection accuracy include:
- Cloud cover
- Sea state and wave patterns
- Atmospheric conditions
- Image resolution
- Vessel contrast against surrounding water
Small islands, waves, clouds, and other visual artifacts may occasionally be misidentified as vessels, especially in rough sea conditions.
In general:
- Vessels between 10–30 meters may be detectable with varying accuracy
- Vessels larger than 50 meters are more reliably detected
- Larger vessels typically produce more accurate and consistent detection results
